I would like some help or at least a pointer in the right direction, I know how to script, I know nothing about mysql or sqlite, every tutorial I have found has misinformation because of broken weblinks.

There are a lot free e-books / web sites / ... online
a start is maybe:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/
There are also some nice GUI tools that do the most work for you.
So you can easy create and test SQL commands with this.
