I came accross the subject of running nwn2server.exe under Wine on Linux a couple of times now. I also hear that it works fine, if you are not using NWNX4. I have to admit this annoys me a bit, and I would like to change this.

The situation is that running a PW (which most who run the dedicated server will want to do) on Linux (cheaper hosting, decreased licensing costs, good remote administration) does work, but without NWNX4 (pointless IMHO).

I can think of a couple of reasons why NWNX4 would not work with wine:
a) madcodehook using special API calls that are not emulated
b) DLL loading works slightly different and thus the hooking DLL is not loaded
c) IPC communication between NWNX Controller and NWNX Hook do not work.
d) ...

While I do not think that changing Wine is a viable option for me (due to time constraints), I could imagine changing NWNX4 so it works better with it. As doing this takes time away from developing NWNX4 itself, I would only do this if there are enough people who would want to run the server on Linux, and who would be willing to support the development process.

Note: I am not saying that it definitely can be done or that it definitely will be done. I am only testing the waters.

So, if you want Linux support, please speak up below.

Note 2: I know people have to register here on nwnx.org to voice their opinion. That's part of how I am makeing sure that there is a real interest.

I'm surely one of those who'll be running Linux if NWNX4 is available for it. On my PW we're using Windows XP as server and it's a pain in the neck. We had to install a SSH server, a PERL engine (for a script we use), a MySQL server and other things that linux natively supports. The stability on Windows is good I have to admit, but the resources usage is high. I'm still hoping that Obsidian gives the community a linux standalone server, thus I believe that having a Linux NWNX4 is definetely the way to go.

Clarification: If OE releases a Linux standalone server, NWNX4 for Linux is a no-brainer.

This poll is specifically about making NWNX4 work with the Windows emulator WINE.

Same here -- we have a Windows guest VM running under linux server; if I didn't need NWNX4, we would be using linux + wine and save a /lot/ of administrative headache.

This poll seems to get interesting Smile

Also, please remember, before you hit that "Yay!" button, that all development time spent on the Wine version will be taken away from the main NWNX4 development.

Hey, I'm an indifferent...

--at this point I'd just love to see the mad chook disposed of.
I think that should this occur, your Linux (wine) might just fall into place.

Virusman has done a lot of work in the Linux space (and seems to have a handle on the Windows stuff as well), me zero. Which button did he push?

But on the poll so far... Title = "Linux".
M$ uses are going to ignore it.
Penguins are going to say "Yay!" regardless.

I'm indifferent on this topic. I'm not really interested in NWN2 now and only a native port would be the acceptable solution for me.

actually only registered with this forum to sound my vote...

yes, adjusting nwnx4 so it will work under wine would be _GREAT_ - nwnx4 is the only reason we are heading for a windows server atm, because without nwnx4 a _persistant_ world is much harder to build, if not impossible at all.

Right now, the votes are

Quote:
Yay! [ 12 ]
Nah... [ 2 ]
I'm indifferent [ 4 ]

So there are 6 votes from people who are are not interested in a Linux port, and most of them (except 2) think it would not hurt the main line of NWNX development too much.

Keep the votes coming, please. The current results are interesting, but I would like to get some more opinions.

Same here. Linux is MUCH better for keeping nwn2 server on it but its very hard and unpleasant to create a persistant world without nwnx.
So, please, make linux version Wink

Hmm, according to this poll, 20 people would use a linux version with WINE (as of today).

All-in-all, this result does not quite justify a WINE version of NWNX4 yet...

Everyone who wolud like to make any module to NWN2 (and host it) would need this. Of course yes, it's very necessary.
