Hello:
This request really spawns from a position of ignorance, but I am pretty sure I am not the only one out there, so here goes.
Perhaps it would be possible to include a basic batch file with the NWNX2 download? I recently tried to install and run the program and through discussions on the script board, I found out that I need a batch file to make NWNX2 work.
Having never created a batch file in my life, I have no idea on how to go about doing this. A member of the community has been so kind as to offer me one (thank you Grim), but I would like to see this included in the instructions and download. I saw nothing in the instructions that mentioned a batch file, so I didn't even know where to begin with the module command lines.
I feel this would help those of us who are a little more computer challenged get NWNX2 off the ground with less confusion.

I don't know that including a batch file really is within the scope of this work. I can see that a tutorial to using a batch file or shortcut might be helpful but this really all falls within the scope of using the NWN server command line parameters.
BTW, my use of a batch file goes back to my old MS-DOS roots that are probably as deep as the roots to all the gray hair on my head. You can accomplish the same thing with shortcuts. _________________ Grim Havoc

A demonstration batch file would make life simpler for the GUI generation, on the ratio of effort put in vs ease of use, it's probably the largest improvement that could be made. |

Perhaps we should add an 'extras' folder to the distros where non-essentials could be included. |

Through this process I have been told a couple of times now that I actually don't need a batch file, but rather need to add a server command line.
Where and how do I create the server command line? Also, shortcuts have been mentioned. I am uncertain what type of shortcut needs to be created and where to place the shorcut to avoid the use of a batch file.
Could someone please clarify this for me?

To create the shortcut, right-click on the NWNX executable, and HOLDING THE RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON DOWN drag and drop it somewhere else. When the dialog box comes up, chose "Create Shortcut".
Now you can right-click on the new shortcut, chose "Properties", and edit the line that is labelled "Target" to add all the things you need like the line showing which module to open, etc.... |

Then do I start the server off of this shortcut? Also, will this override the ini. file? In other words, do I have to fill in every single function as the ini. file, or will this basically take over?
I assume that once I follow your instructions I can start the server then it will reload when it crashes or goes non-responsive?

Yes, at that point you could start your server from the shortcut and it would reload, as it's supposed to. as to an INI file, I don't think that has been included yet (I just downloaded the latest version for playing with). But is at least in discussion. once there is an INI file, you could make the changes there, instead of using the shortcut (although the shortcut will still work, and would even override any settings in the INI, I believe)
This is all assuming you have the proper switches in your Target line.
Mine looks something like this: NWNX2.exe -module "PersistantWorld" -publicserver 0
(this uses all the defaults makes the server private, and loads the module called PersistantWorld) |

I would like to ammend (retract) my suggestion that a batch file be included. This is really not neccessary, as most of you already know.
What is neccessary, however, is including the instructions on how to create the command line on a shortcut.
Unfortunately for me it was not obvious that this was the solution for getting NWNX2 to work. I think this would be an extremely useful part of the instructions.
Also, the instructions indicate that you need to copy a module outside the directory. If one uses the shortcut command line method, this is also not neccessary.
I suppose what would be best is an update of the instructions to also include the true method of getting this great system to work.

it may also be helpful to include instructions on making a batch file, as i have a single batch file that has all my parameters, and then a shortcut to the batch file on the desktop (in case i need to kill NWNX or whatever, then restart it), as well as a shortcut in the Startup folder, so that when i change the module's filename (for my own sanity when adding/fixing stuff), i just have to edit the batch file once, and need not worry about updating multiple shortcuts _________________ A Persistent World West2 | APWW2 Forums
