Hi,

What is currently the preferred way of sharing characterdata between servers within a PW ?
In a setup where all servers are on a LAN, I am sure the optimal is to use SMB or NFS or similar, but what other options are available when the servers are scattered over the internet ?

In the past, my PW has been using SMBFS, AFS, NFS and lately WEBDAV on a dedicated servervault. The most common issues are lagspikes when users log on/off as nwn1 is singlethreaded and "waits" for the read/write operations on the bic to finish. Whenever there are problems completing the read/write operations, a CEB (chaotic evil barbarian) character will replace the users .bic in some cases.

Vaultster is certainly a viable option,- but im not very familiar with it.

What im looking for is opinions from people of other PWs that have been through the same issues. Hopefully some input on pros/cons of vaultster.

Finally, there was some talk a while back about the possibility of leaving .bic's completely and using SQL for characterdata aswell. What is the current status on this ? Is it even possible ? One could only imagine the advantages such a system would offer a PW (webfrontend, realtime changes, etc) I realize there are most likely limitations on whats actually possible here,- input would be appreciated.

Thanks

It'd be possible, you'd have to leto everything back, however, and with items the amount of data and the complexity would be daunting. Vaultster was designed to handle the problem you are having.
