Ok, a whole week is harsh, but I had similar things happen to me as well.
It's not a question of beeing moronic or not, but rather whether your brain is trained to overlook the obvious and focus on the overall picture. Your internal pattern matching didn't help you in this case  .
I feel with you. Ouch.
