I am a bit confused as to what I am doing wrong. The server has not been reseting after crashes and I figured that I had this solved when I entered -port 5121 on the command line...but then the server crashed and didn't restart.

There was an error that read cannot establish connection, port in use (or something very similar).

Any ideas what is going wrong here?

Have you disabled Dr. Watson (http://www.nwnx.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=36&highlight=dr+watson) ?

Do you have the Vaulster plugin installed ?

I have not yet tried disabling Dr. Watson, but I will certainly do so. We do not have the vaultster plug in installed. Also, we are running our server off of Windows XP, so would this still make Dr. Watson the issue?

Just to be clear, though, the error I am getting is not the same as in the link you provided. Our error states that the "port is in use and a connection cannot be established"... this is only if we have -port 5121 in the command line.

I would like to restate what is happening, and hopefully this can be cured.

I have removed any reference to the port on my command line. This will enable the server to restart automatically after a crash, but it has the undesired effect of advancing the port the server is on from 5121 to 5122. This effectivly disables direct connect as players don't know to enter 5122 after a crash.

Now if the server crashes while it is on 5122, we believe it will do one of two things. It will either NOT restart, or will advance once more to 5123.

I have a feeling this is something easily corrected, but I am stumped as to what I could be doing wrong.

Any help is certainly appreciated.

I think a parameter that delays the restart of the nwserver might do the trick. Someone mentioned the need for it a few days ago, too. I will code something for you.. check out the changelog of nwnx in the next few days.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Please post a link somewhere when you do complete this, and I (and our players) will be anxiously awaiting this fix.

Is there anything that I can do in the meantime?

Thank you again!

I'd put my money on it reverting to port 5121 on the 2nd crash, since almost certanly by the time the 2nd server dies the first will have had it's resources released by the OS.

Minerva, the new version of NWNX (2.61) is in the dowloadsection. I am anxious to hear if the new switch helps you.

I would like to thank you for making the changes recently on NWNX2.

Unfortunately, I am still having some issues.

It seems the server will survive one reset after a crash. After that, all bets are off.

I am starting to get a little frustrated, as I have tried multiple solutions to fix this. I am pretty sure that I am doing something very wrong, though.

Here is what I have done...

I downloaded NWNX2 today, the new version. I overwrote the existing files in my NWN directory. I added the ini file to the same directory. I set up a new shortcut and redid the command line to include the reset parameter.

I put the delay function on the command line, and set it to 120 seconds... I thought perhaps this might be the issue to fix this. I also had the ini set at 5121. When the server crashed with the ini set to 5121, I discovered that I had the same port advancement issue as before, so I removed it. It looks like this changes the port on the server to -1 (?) after the second crash if I leave it on.

Having taken any reference to the port OFF the ini, at this point I thought it might releive the issue. This isn't the case, though, as now the server won't reset at all it seems.

So, I have a few questions.

1. Has anyone else reported this port advancement issue?

2. Is 120 seconds too long for the delay parameter?

3. Does the delay parameter go on the command line?

4. Does the port have to be specified on the ini you have included, or will the server rely on the original ini if left blank?

Anyway, I hope to get to the bottom of this soon. It is entirely possible I have made a simple mistake somewhere, but I am pretty sure I am setting this up correctly for the most part.

Thank you.

I did some testing and I have concluded that I did possibly set up provided ini incorrectly. I have found that I do need to have the ini read "yes" for watchdog enabled, even though I had selected it on the NWNX2 exe.

I have tested my method by purposely closing the server, and when closed this way it does in fact restart continuosly.

The only thing I couldn't "test live" was the event of an actual server crash. I am anxiously (heh) awaiting another crash. I think it is possibly that the pop-up that occurs when the server crashes (the one that says NWN server has experienced a problem and needs to close, would you like to send an error report) might be the last issue causing interference on the restart.

Is there any way to disable the error report that occurs upon server crash?

I also am not certain if this is what is causing the port to advance, or if the port advancement is still an issue. I don't know if this will still happen until another crash. I will report when I find out.

I just want to thank you again for your responsive work to and with the community. I hope to have this running trouble free soon, then promote the "begeeses" out of NWNX2. Laughing

Thank you!

Minerva, there is a free program called ClickOff, I used that initially when that error window popped up under XP pro, you add it, and after that, if you get that sort of error it takes care of it.

The saga continues...

I am absolutely certain that I need to turn off Dr. Watson.

I have done everything else, I believe, that is neccessary and possible, and yet the server still won't restart after a crash.

When the server crashes, I still get two pop-ups that occure, and I believe they are blocking NWNX2 from restarting properly.

The first says "NWN server has encontered a problem and needs to close". It has a button to DEBUG and a button to CLOSE. If I close this pop-up, I discover that there is another pop-up underneath that says "NW Server... Could not establish a network communication, port may be in use", and has the big red X/circle symbol. Once I close both of these boxes NWNX2 will kick in, and the server will restart.

It was not enough to simply turn off the error reporting from the start menu, as this problem persists since I have done so.

My question is this:

Could someone provide a detailed explaination for disabling Dr. Watson for WinXP home?

I opened Dr. Watson and didn't find anyway to just "zoink" it.

I am certain that NWNX2 will work once I take the good Dr. out back and shoot him!

Thanks again for everyone who has provided input thus far!

Minerva READ the linked page up in Senalaya's last post. That article tells you how to diable, as well as enable, error reporting. Sorry if I sound blunt... but the saying that deals with the forest for the trees comes to mind right now... Wink

Well, I certainly did read them. The problem is that when I get into the registry, the instructions fall apart because my registry doesn't appear to have an export registry file in the AE debug folder? Maybe I am just missing it, I dunno.

For the record, this is my first time changing registry items, so I would rather err on the side of caution.

I am contacting customer service and hopefully they can tell me how to disable it for Win XP Home.
